A new report from OpenSignal has shown that there’s more to the story on Singapore’s improving network quality. 15% of smartphone users in the country use the internet exclusively via mobile, never accessing Wi-Fi.
5G deployment, especially in the APAC region (particularly countries like Singapore and Australia), has led to fewer users relying on Wi-Fi. Even though fixed broadband is almost ubiquitous across the board, mobile 5G is, for many, good enough to replace it. If you’re not a gamer or you primarily use the internet for work, mobile services can be just as fast and reliable as Wi-Fi.
Affordability comes into play, too. For many Singaporeans, mobile plans include hefty amounts of data. The following telcos offer mobile plans with unlimited data, which can, in turn, reduce reliance on fixed broadband networks and encourage users to take advantage of their mobile data offerings.
As large mobile data allowances become more affordable, some even choose to forego fixed broadband as a whole and hotspot their mobile data instead. Some households, especially lower-income families or those in low-connectivity areas, are more likely to prioritise mobile plans, especially if they cannot afford both, or if infrastructure limits their options for internet access.
As a whole, Wi-Fi still dominates for data consumption in APAC regions, especially when it comes to heavy data use. Fixed networks are still preferred for streaming, facetime and gaming, but when it comes to light data usage, mobile networks are still preferred. Smartphone users are taking advantage of their 5G data allowances even more, especially when telcos like Singtel and Starhub offer unlimited data plans.
