Singapore is one of the best countries in the world for expats. It offers an enriching, diverse cultural experience, reliable transportation, and plenty of career opportunities. So much so that 29% of Singapore’s population is non-residents, according to an expat Insider survey.

Singapore prides itself on technological innovation, and as such, has some of the fastest internet speeds in the world.

Here’s everything you need to know about setting up your broadband, and which plan you should consider as an expat in Singapore.

How broadband works in Singapore

There are a few things to consider before setting up your broadband in Singapore. While locking in a broadband plan might not be as high on your list as a phone plan, it’s still worth surveying your options so you can lock in a plan that ticks your boxes.

Contract terms

When searching for a broadband plan in Singapore, the majority of choices come with either 12- or 24-month contract, with very few providers offering no-contract plans.

Speeds

After a few years of consolidation, there aren't tons of different speeds on offer for broadband plans in Singapore, but generally they range between 3Gbps and 10Gbps. The speed you choose depends on how many people you’ve got at home. If it’s just you, 3Gbps should be more than enough for 4K video streaming, web browsing, gaming, and small business-grade tasks.

However, if your connection is hosting over 3 people, or you’re a heavy gamer, it might be wise to opt for the 10Gbps connection so you can host large downloads, or stream and game with little lag and buffering.

Bundling

Bundling can allow you to snag some extra savings on your plan. Several providers allow you to bundle your mobile and TV subscription plans with your broadband, including StarHub, Singtel, and GOMO.

StarHub offers HomeHub+, which allows you to bundle your broadband plan with a range of TV subscriptions. They currently offer five HomeHub+ plans, including one 5Gbps option, and four 10Gbps options.

All plans include a WiFi 7 router, with varying inclusions of Netflix Standard, HBO Max, Premier League Access, Entertainment Plus, Sports Plus, and Language TV Plus. You can even add a smart device like a TV, if you need. Select plans also include a free TV+ Box for 24 months.

Through Singtel Circle, you can get more savings the more you bundle. If you bundle two eligible services, including mobile, broadband, and TV, you’ll save 10% your monthly bill and will receive $200 off your annual mobile phone upgrade. If you bundle three or more services, you’ll get 15% off your monthly bill and $200 off your annual mobile phone upgrade.

If you already have a 5G+ plan with GOMO, you can snag 15% off either of their 12-month or 24-month broadband plans.

Providers

We track 9 providers in our database, with a range of prices, inclusions, and contract terms, so you can find the best broadband plan for your new chapter in Singapore.

For cheap home broadband in Singapore, we recommend starting your comparisons with ViewQwest. While there are plenty of no-frills broadband plans available, they’re often inflated by the cost to add a router.

No Contract HyperSpeed 10Gbps Broadband

Min. cost $352.96

Expats are transient people. While no-contract plans aren’t that popular (there’s only one in our database), there are several broadband plans available on a 12-month contract, so you can remain relatively flexible. However, it’s worth noting that the trade-off for this flexibility is a much pricier plan and fewer inclusions.

If you’re specifically after a no-contract plan, consider the No Contract HyperSpeed 10Gbps Broadband by MyRepublic. It’ll set you back $49.95 a month, plus $302.97 upfront, which includes a $59.90 Service Installation Fee, and a $61.04 NLT service activation fee. Even though it doesn’t come with a router, you will get a $150 discount to add one to your plan.

If life throws you a curveball and you have to head back to the homeland, you won’t have to pay the $49.05 cancellation fee if you need to cancel after three months on the plan.

As an extra perk, this plan comes with a free home phone line with unlimited calls.

Whether you’re a freelancer or you’ve been sent to work in Singapore by your employer, if you work from home, you’ll need a reliable broadband plan. Chances are, you won’t need all-out speed, but it helps to have at least 5Gbps.

We’d recommend StarHub’s UltraSpeed 5Gbps plan, which comes with a free ONT and TP-Link HB710 tri-band WiFi 7 Router. It costs $29.55 per month for the first 24 months (on a 24-month contract, then back to the usual price of $68.53 per month). You’ll also get free 12 months of Cyber Protect 3, and can unlock further discounts if you bundle your phone plan.

Also consider:

If StarHub isn’t the right fit, consider other providers with at least 5Gbps speeds and a router or modem included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a Singapore resident to get a Singapore broadband plan?

To get a Singapore broadband plan, you must be a Singaporean citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid employment pass or other long-term visit pass. Non-residents can use roaming data on Singapore tourist mobile plans.

How long are broadband contracts?

Broadband contracts are commonly 24 months in length. Sometimes there are 12-month contracts; however, the lowest cost is often yielded on a 24-month plan.

That being said, it makes the most sense for expats to consider 12-month contracts over 24-month contracts, especially if they’re in Singapore temporarily or anticipate leaving in the near future.

Which broadband provider has the fastest speed in Singapore?

According to Ookla’s Speedtest Awards, MyRepublic consistently has the fastest internet speeds in Singapore, followed by SIMBA, Singtel, ViewQwest, M1, then StarHub. Note that WhizComms and eight are not tracked by Ookla.

Do all providers offer unlimited data?

Yes, all of the 9 broadband providers in Singapore offer unlimited data with their internet plans.
