What is a data-only SIM plan?
A data-only SIM plan is one that includes a data allowance but doesn't have call minutes or an SMS allowance. This makes a data-only SIM plan a great fit for those with a compatible smartwatch, tablet or laptop that's not used for calls or texting. Alternatively, a data-only plan can be used with a mobile phone that isn't used for calls or SMS.
Is a data-only SIM better than a mobile phone SIM?
The usefulness of a data-only SIM card depends on the device. For instance, a data-only SIM card or eSIM is meant for secondary devices, like smartwatches that are used alongside a mobile phone. Alternatively, SIM-compatible tablets and laptops aren't used for mobile calls or SMSes but a data-only SIM is useful for using the internet on these devices via a mobile network.
Note that mobile providers may block regular phone plan SIM cards from being used in data-only devices. Mobile phone SIM cards are designed to be paired with a mobile phone. These allow users to make and receive calls, send and receive SMSes, plus use data for browsing the web. Because of this, mobile phone SIM plans tend to have better overall value.
It is possible to save money by buying a mobile phone SIM plan with more data rather than a mobile phone SIM and a data-only SIM. Modern mobile phones support hotspotting, which lets you share your mobile phone plan data with other devices via Wi-Fi. Alternatively, use a data-only SIM card with a WiFi dongle to share data across WiFi devices.
Note: Data plans terminology
Note that certain mobile providers in Singapore may use “data plans” to refer to SIM-only or prepaid mobile plans that come with larger data allowances. These so-called data plans may also include call minutes and SMS allowances, plus other perks like international direct dial (IDD) minutes for overseas calls. Basically, if a SIM plan has call minutes and an SMS allowance, it's not a data-only plan.
