The Bear just dropped a surprise prequel episode ahead of its final season

Earlier this month, FX served us a cheeky secret episode in anticipation of the fifth and final season of The Bear.

Revealed by actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach on Instagram, the special episode explores the tumultuous relationship between Michael ‘Mikey’ Berzatto (Jon Bernthal) and Richard ‘Richie’ Jerimovich.

What is "Gary" about?

The hour-long episode, titled “Gary”, sees Mikey and Richie embark on a road trip to Gary, Indiana. They shoot some hoops, Mikey strikes a connection with a woman at the bar, and we begin to understand the complicated connection between Mikey and Richie.

Over the course of four seasons, we’ve seen Richie grow tremendously. From someone who’s notoriously impulsive and quick to anger, to someone who takes pride in his work. We’ve gotten glimpses of Mikey and witnessed how his suicide heavily impacted Carmy (Jeremy Allen White). However, we haven’t seen much of the two men’s relationship.

Set around the time of the award-winning "Fishes" episode in season 2, "Gary" gives us some insight into the layered emotional state of Mikey and the man Richie was at that point in time. In true The Bear fashion, it’ll tug at your heartstrings, with a dramatic cliffhanger you’ll want to see before devouring season five.

The episode was co-written by Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach themselves and was directed by the creator and showrunner of The Bear, Christopher Storer.

How to watch "Gary" in Singapore

"Gary" acts as a standalone, flashback episode, and as such, won’t be found under The Bear title on Disney Plus. You can dig into the secret episode by searching for “Gary” in the Disney Plus search bar. To watch the secret episode, all you’ll need is a Disney Plus subscription, which you can also add to your StarHub TV or Singtel TV entertainment bundle.

When does season five of The Bear come out?

"Gary"bis the perfect little appetiser to tide us over until the release of The Bear’s fifth and final season. FX has confirmed that season five will be served on Friday, the 26th of June, with all eight episodes dropping at once. Episodes will drop at 9 am Singapore time, with the show picking up right after the intense events of the season four finale.
